Our members currently serve in many sites in Anchorage: Department of Corrections, Catholic Social Services, Alaska Literacy Programs, Bean’s Cafe, Covenant House Alaska, Alaska Native Justice Center, Bridge Builders, and other vital local agencies.
Nine Star proudly host members in our Work Services Program serving unemployed and under-employed individuals; The Youth Education and Employment Programs, helping teens earn diplomas and secure gainful employment; The Adult Education Program, serving GED and ESL students; The Senior Employment Program, helping our local senior citizens learn computer skills and find employment opportunities. Thanks to AmeriCorps members, we can reach deeper and wider than we could on our own.
Benefits of serving as an AmeriCorps member:
AmeriCorps Members through individual involvement improve lives and strengthen communities. Members provide direct service to address individual and community needs such as coaching, mentoring, employment assistance, prisoner re-entry, workshops, and education.
AmeriCorps membership is open to U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents age 17 and older. Members serve full or part time over a 12-month period. Upon successful completion of their service, Members receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of up to $5,350 to pay for college or graduate school or to pay back qualified student loans. During term of service, Members receive health coverage, training, student loan deferment, and a modest monthly stipend. Members who serve part time receive a partial AmeriCorps Education Award.
Picture yourself promoting literacy and work readiness skills in Anchorage and throughout Alaska!
