Work Services for Alaska Temporary Assistance Program (ATAP) Recipients
One point is abundantly clear—Anchorage suffers a shortage of dedicated workers who have both the work habits and attitudes necessary for becoming successful employees. At Nine Star, our clients’ needs dominate the daily agenda. Over thirty years of serving clients has led to the development of the 3 primary points which drive our agency: client orientation, thorough delivery, and follow-up.
The overall purpose of Nine Star’s Employment Training programs is to assist Alaska Temporary Assistance recipients to get a job, keep a job, and advance on the job — thus making it possible for the Alaskan family to live a better life.
Nine Star is a member of a network of agencies working together to provide employment support and services. The network members include:
- Nine Star Education & Employment Services
- The State of Alaska Division of Public Assistance (DPA)
- The State of Alaska Department of Labor (DOL)
- Alaska Housing Finance Corporation (AHFC)
- and many other local agencies providing needed services to our clients
The “Work First” philosophy drives all of the services we provide. The Work First approach is based on the belief that the best way to learn about work is on the job-and the best way to succeed in the labor market is to join it. It is the expectation and goal for our clients to find employment and close their Temporary Assistance cases. The program works methodically to manage barriers, plan for a job search, and help our clients successfully apply for jobs.
Each client in the program will:
- Develop program goals
- Identify barriers to success and a plan to overcome them
- Identify skills and interests
- Understand the job search process (verbal, written and on-line)
- Learn computer basics and Internet skills
- Use the Internet for job search activities
- Review interview and communication skills
- Learn and review marketable skills
- Explore advancement opportunities in possible jobs

The Career Development Center (CDC)provides resources, assistance, and support to Alaskans seeking employment in the Anchorage area by providing professional development workshops. Workshops cover various topics and include skill-based discussions and mock interviews. In addition, CDC also provides assistance with resume, applications, and business correspondence.
